Reconstruction

I don’t know why, but I find myself fascinated by the process of highway construction. From the initial vision of the architects to the meticulous planning of the engineers, and the hard work of the construction workers, every aspect of the undertaking captivates my mind. The sheer complexity and precision involved in transforming a simple road into a multi-lane highway with bridges and updated infrastructure is truly awe-inspiring. The attention to detail extends beyond the physical construction to include changes in exit numbers, updates to GPS systems, and the overall enhancement of the transportation network. It makes me wonder, WHO THINKS OF IT ALL?

My daily commute to drop my son off at school involves navigating a highway that is undergoing a significant transformation into a modern “beltway”. The evolution from a two-lane road to a multi-lane expressway has been a gradual process spanning several years. YES, I SAID YEARS! The constant shift in lanes, the presence of heavy machinery, and the cautionary signs warning of construction zones and potential hazards create a dynamic and evolving landscape. The construction of cement walls and the reconfiguration of surrounding roads hint at the grand scale of the project. As I ride along, my mind often drifts to thinking – why invest so much of the taxpayer’s money and so much effort into updating an existing highway that already serves its purpose?

Watching a familiar word change into a modern highway gave me the following thoughts about personal growth for those of us over 50. If such dedication and resources can be devoted to improving a mere stretch of pavement, then surely, we as individuals should prioritize self-improvement and strive to become the best versions of ourselves. Age and past habits should not deter us from embarking on a journey of self-construction. Just as highways undergo renovations to adapt to changing needs, we too can initiate a process of renewal and create new pathways towards uncharted experiences and personal growth. It is never too late to start the construction of a new chapter in our lives and pave the way for a brighter future.

I’m beginning the renovation on my new beltway. I hope you are too!
